Buying without backup to “save money” usually costs more in frustration. The first long outage turns the automatic gate into a manual chore. Adding backup later is possible on many systems, but it is cleaner and safer when it is designed in from the start.
Ignoring track and hinge maintenance drains batteries early. A sliding leaf that scrapes, or swing leaves that bind, force the motor to work harder on every cycle. A quick clean and lubrication schedule keeps both mains and backup happier.
Losing the release key turns a flat battery into a lockout. Cut a spare. Label it. Tell the family where it lives.
